Restoring Character: Reviving an Older Colorado Springs Home

One of the projects I’m currently working on involves helping bring an older Colorado Springs home back to life. I’m assisting with the permit documentation and finish selections, and the contractor recently shared a video showing the current condition of the house and the work that is underway.

Projects like this are particularly meaningful to me because there are many homes throughout Colorado Springs that sit vacant or abandoned for long periods of time. While these structures may appear worn down at first glance, many of them contain incredible architectural character that would be difficult to replicate in new construction today.

Older homes often feature elements such as original millwork, hardwood flooring, and unique architectural details that give the home personality. In this particular project, one of my favorite features are the vaulted ceilings in the second story bedrooms . The angles of the ceiling planes allow sunlight to reflect throughout the space in a way that creates a bright, dynamic interior environment. It’s a detail that adds a tremendous amount of character and is rarely incorporated into modern production homes.

Beyond the architectural features, projects like this also play an important role in our local community. Colorado Springs, like many growing cities, is currently experiencing a housing shortage. Revitalizing existing homes helps add much-needed housing while also improving surrounding neighborhoods and preserving the historic charm that makes many areas of the city so special.

Initial Space Planning Concepts

In many new developments today, homes are often designed and built at a rapid pace in order to maximize efficiency and profitability. While these neighborhoods serve an important role in providing housing, they don’t always prioritize individuality or architectural character.

When I walk into older homes like this one, I see something different. I see the craftsmanship, the unique structural elements, and the personality that already exists within the space. These homes have stories, and with the right vision and care, they can be transformed into something truly special again. It’s this sense of history and character that draws many people to older neighborhoods and helps create communities that feel established, vibrant, and unique.
